I took a trip to eBaum's World like I always do when I am bored. This time, there was a shocking headline at the top of the page: "eBaum's World being forced to censor content due to regulations set by the IRLB.ORG." The site provided a statement, saying the Internet Regulations and Legislation Bureau (IRLB) was making it censor its content. Individual clips now had to be rated just like television. WEB-Y, WEB-PG, WEB-MA, etc. There were several links to sites you could go to if you wanted to read more about the censorship. Even ways to fight back! I hate any kind of media censorship, so I was pissed! So much so, that I was getting ready to write a rant about the IRLB on this very blog. Then, I remembered it was April first. April Fool's Day. I had almost been made a fool. I looked up this bill online. It wasn't there. The IRLB does not even exist. eBaum's World created a bunch of fake sites, which looked real just to pull off the prank.
The sad thing is, if things keep going the way they are in this country, this prank will become a reality. Look at Howard Stern. The Janet Jackson Super Bowl madness. Stations were fined millions of dollars for something they had no idea was coming. It's a damn shame that the country has become so sensitive. People are more concerned about if their children hear a "shit" or a "fuck" on television, when there are much bigger fish to fry. If people put the same amount of energy into things that matter (the war in Iraq, sky-high gas prices, etc.) then the things that should be changed actually WOULD be changed.
