Tammy Faye Dies
Sunday, July 22, 2007
Just days after her shocking appearance on Larry King Live, Tammy Faye Messner has died. Messner died Friday after battling cancer for ten years. She was 65 years old. Weighing just 65 pounds, Messner made her final television appearance on Larry King Live on Thursday saying she had no doubt that she would go to heaven.
Messner gained fame as a televangelist during the late 1970's and 80's, preaching with her then husband, Jim Bakker. She quickly became known for her mounds of make-up and huge hair. Their empire came crashing down after Bakker had an affair with a church secretary and admitted to defrauding thousands of followers.
Messner bounced back from the controversy in the 90's. She co-hosted the short-lived daytime talk show, "Jim J. and Tammy Faye" with actor Jim J. Bullock. In 2004, she was a housemate on VH1's "The Surreal Life."
