"IDOL" FINALE RATINGS WAY DOWN

A so-so season of American Idol ends on the decline. Last night, 24.2 million people tuned in for the finale, down 18% percent from last year. The finale numbers haven't seen so low since the show debuted in 2002.

The finale had it's highs and its lows. Just about all of the past Idol winners took to the stage to say goodbye to Simon Cowell. Paula Abdul was also back to say bye to her friend. The tribute was good, but it seems Simon is just fine with his departure. He didn't show much emotion for his final bow. Also, where were the parting words from his fellow judges?

Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morissette, Janet Jackson were among the many current acts that performed. Older acts like Chicago, Hall & Oates, Joe Cocker and Alice Cooper also performed, but came off looking tired. Also, why would producers have these oldtimers perform if they are trying to attract a young audience? It seems the talent could have been a lot hipper.

YOU KNOW IT'S SWEEPS WHEN...

It's May sweeps. That magical time of the year where every show on TV is new and more outrageous than ever to get ratings. As always, our favorite shows are up to all sorts of sweeps stunts. Here's some of what The Daily Edition has noticed so far:

Today Show w/ Hoda & Kathie Lee: On 5/13 the ladies went all-natural, appearing before cameras without makeup.

GMA: On 5/12 weatherman Sam Champion had surgery live on the show to remove skin cancer cells from his shoulder.

Tyra: On 5/12, Tyra did a show called "Strange Sex." It featured a female-to-man transsexual, a guy who's teaching himself to breastfeed, a woman who has orgasms all day long and first cousions who got married.

Dr. Phil: On 5/11, Dr. Phil did a show called "Dr. Phil Confronts Animal Abusers." Things got heated when Dr. Phil confronted a guy named Rob, who trains his dogs to fight. Rob admitted to shooting more than 100 dogs to death and thought there was nothing wrong with training them to fight. Dr. Phil told Rob he thought he was "despicable."

Big finales: Dancing with the Stars and American Idol both wrapped their seasons with overly long two-hour shows. It seems viewers are growing bored. Ratings for both shows were down in the double digits.

Jesse James on Nightline: (5/25) Sandra Bullock's soon-to-be ex-husband broke his silence, admitting he cheated on America's sweeheart. He claimed he's a victim of child abuse and said he wishes he wasn't getting a divorce.
