INFOTAINMENT FOR THE PEOPLE OF EARTH SINCE 2006

Boston's "The Ten O'Clock News" Signs Off

It's not all that often when we see a news station sign off the air. But tonight, the folks at Boston's WLVI-TV 56 aka CW 56 had to do just that. One week to the day before Christmas.

Everyone knew it was coming. Sunbeam television bought the station three months ago and starting tomorrow night, their Boston affiliate WHDH will bring their brand of fast-paced news to CW56.

This was certainly a bittersweet goodbye for the people of CW56 tonight. They have been delivering the news to the people of Boston since 1984 and saying goodbye now was like mourning the loss of a family member years too soon.

Jack Hynes, who was the first anchor of "The Ten O'Clock News" was back for the last show and said it perfectly. "A week before Christmas should not be a time for sad farewells." Hynes went on to say the whole event was "tragic." "Someone, somwhere should have, could have stepped up to the plate and bought the station," Hynes said live on the air. "So, with bitter reflections we sign off for the last time."

Anchor Karen Marinella, a native of Massachusetts, said she loved doing news in the state she's always been a part of. "I have had a blast doing news in my own backyard." Still, she agreed with Jack Hynes about the sudden closure of the station. "You lose a voice when something like this happens," Marinella said.

The final newscast wrapped with an emotional tribute that featured all of the staff, most of whom are out of the job at a time of the year when no one wants to be looking for work. At the end of the staff package, the 'on air' sign at CW56 went black. Finally, a shot of an empty news set which slowly faded to black.
