Stern Show Wraps Early Because of Gas Smell
Monday, January 08, 2007
A natural gas-like smell spread over Manhattan and parts of New Jersey this morning, causing quite a scare. Howard Stern was live on the air as the odor spread. It got so overwhelming, that Howard decided to end his show early just in case. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the smell may have been caused by a leak of a substance called mercaptan that is added to natural gas for safety reasons to give it a recognizable odor. Twelve people were taken to hospitals with minor complaints. The city was bombarded with 911 calls all morning, but the smell seemed to clear up by the afternoon.
