ROGER EBERT AND RICHARD ROEPER BOTH LEAVING 'EBERT & ROEPER'
Monday, July 21, 2008
Film critics Richard Roeper and Roger Ebert are both leaving the syndicated show, "At The Movies with Ebert & Roeper" after eight seasons. Roeper couldn't agree on a contract extension with Disney-ABC. His last appearance on the show will be the weekend of August 16-17.
"Several months ago, Disney offered to extend my contract, which expires at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season," Roeper said. "I opted to wait. Much transpired after that behind the scenes, but an agreement was never reached, and we are all moving on."
Roeper will continue writing his column in the Chicago Sun Times. He also hopes to co-host another movie review show in the near future.
Roger Ebert has been absent from the show for two years because of health issues. He, too, has announced that he will no longer be associated with the show.
Ebert released a statement on his website saying the show's trademark still belongs to him. "...the thumbs will return. We are discussing possibilities, and plan to continue the show's tradition."
