PROMISE RINGS CONTROVERSY AT VMA'S
Monday, September 08, 2008
For once, MTV's Video Music Awards were not a snooze. Everyone's buzzing about last night's show because of several comments made by host Russell Brand. The relatively unknown comedian from the UK started the show by telling everyone to vote for Barack Obama. He also referred to President Bush as a "retarded cowboy."
Brand also made a bunch of lewd jokes about the teen band The Jonas Brothers. He also made fun of their promise rings throughout the show and joked about how they've pledged to remain virgins until marriage.
His comments upset Jordin Sparks so much, that she fired back. She came out to present a performance with John Legend, but before she did, she had some words to say about promise rings.
"I just want to say, it's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and girl wants to be a slut, OK?" Sparks said. She also wears a promise ring.
Later on, Brand jokingly apologized for his remarks, saying he didn't want to upset his teen fans. He said he was planning to wear one and abstain from sex. By the way, The Jonas Brothers were sitting in the audience, just feet away from Brand, as he made fun of their lifestyle.
