ARTIE LANGE SUICIDE ATTEMPT
Thursday, January 07, 2010
Howard Stern show favorite Artie Lange reportedly tried to commit suicide over the weekend. The New York Post reports, the troubled comedian stabbed himself nine times. Lange's mother discovered him covered in blood at his apartment and frantically called 911. She was visiting him to drop off some food when she made the horrible discovery. Despite the heavy bleeding, surgeons were able to save Artie. Artie has battled drugs, alcohol and depression all of his life.
Recently, it appeared he was finally getting things together. He lost a bunch of weight and has a new girlfriend. But before Christmas break, Artie seemed to be headed downhill again. The show gave him a week off and now, this very sad news.
Howard Stern spoke out about the suicide attempt this morning.
"I'm angry about it. I'm sad about it," Stern said. "He's wrestling with some serious stuff...I wish him well," Stern said.
Stern also said that he's upset that the story hit the papers and wants to know who leaked it. Stern started to read the story from the paper, but just couldn't get through it. He said it "feels weird" for him to be the one to read it because they're so close.
"Artie's demons run deeper than I ever knew," Stern said. "It's a real tragedy. It's a real tragedy."
Stern says he has not spoken to Artie since the attempt. Stern said he figures Artie will call him if he needs anything, adding he's "freaked out" about this. Robin Quivers said she has talked to him and said that he's doing well physically.
Stern then took a bunch of calls from listeners. One woman was in tears. All of them, expressed their great support for Artie.
Stern said he doesn't want anyone to forget how talented Artie is and how much he has contributed to the show. Of course, it's too early to know if Artie will ever be back.
