INFOTAINMENT FOR THE PEOPLE OF EARTH SINCE 2006

2007 IN REVIEW: MUSIC

AMERICAN IDOL: SUCCESS STORIES
Former American Idol contestants dominated the airwaves. Chris Daughtry didn't even win the show, but the rocker struck it big with 2007's Daughtry. The album was Billboard's best-selling album of 2007. Fellow contestant Carrie Underwood also hitting it big in '07 with her album and the song "Before He Cheats," an anthem for girls who've been done wrong. Elliott Yamin also scored a hit single with the break-up song Wait For You this year.

AMERICAN IDOL: FAILURES
Things didn't go so well for American Idol winner and chart-topper Kelly Clarkson. Her third album, My December, only spawned one radio hit, Never Again, which was no where near as good as tracks from her previous albums. This year's Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, is also not fairing so well. Her debut album came in at number ten on Billboard, the lowest debut ever for an American Idol winner. Let's not forget about last season's runner-up, Katherine McPhee, whose debut album debuted at number two on Billboard, but quickly fizzled. Her single, "Over It," never really went as far as intended.

THE RISE OF TIMBALAND
He's been in the music biz forever, producing hit tracks for arists like Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake. But this year, Timbaland struck gold with his own album, Timbaland Presents Shock Value. The rapper paired up with stars like Timberlake and Furtado and unknown artists like Keri Hilson and One Republic for a string of chart-topping singles.

LIVE EARTH CONCERTS
Live Earth was a series of worldwide concerts organized by Al Gore to fight climate change. The concerts, on 7/7/07, brought together more than 150 musical acts at 11 locations. The concerts were broadcast on television, radio and online. Duran Duran, Kanye West, Beastie Boys, KT Tunstall, Dave Matthews Band, Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson were amoung the artists who took to the stage for the event.

MUSICAL NOTES

- Radiohead released their new album online telling fans they could pay whatever they wanted for it.
- Hannah Montana aka Miley Cyrus cast a spell on the tween audience, selling out concerts all over the country.
- Amy Winehouse was praised for her unique sound and panned for her wild behavior.
- Sirius and XM Radio spent the year trying to merge, but the powers that be in Washington aren't so sure it's such a good idea.
